About

At the age of 12 years old, Megan Sheehy signed up for a Marblehead Volleyball Clinic and fell in love with the sport of volleyball. Within days of learning to play, Megan was passing, setting, and attacking the volleyball like a natural! Megan loved the team atmosphere, competiveness, and skill the sport required and each and every day she stepped out on the court, Megan’s determination and drive were written all over her face. In the spring of 2013, Megan and her mom Jean joined a committee of players, parents, and community members, to establish volleyball as a Varsity sport at Marblehead High School. With people like Megan supporting this cause, in the fall of 2013 and Marblehead High School began its inaugural season as an official high school program.

When Megan was diagnosed with a rare form of osteosarcoma in July 2013, her love of the sport never wavered. Megan was determined to play again and made herself as much of the Marblehead Volleyball program as she could in spite of her battle. Megan sat alongside her coaches and cheered on her teammates whenever she could and brought out a sense of strength and pride in all of us.

The LoveStrong Volleyball Scholarship [funded by a Private Foundation] is dedicated to sharing the love of the game of volleyball that Megan felt so passionately about. This scholarship will allow girls, age 8 to 18 to learn and become competitive in this growing sport.
The LoveStrong Volleyball Scholarship is pleased to offer one annual scholarships of up to $600 to promote knowledge of and skill development in the sport of volleyball.

Megan was diagnosed with osteosarcoma the day after her 13th birthday.  During her many and often long stays at the MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHfC) she was delighted to discover a new stuffed animal on her pillow when she arrived on the floor.

Megan did not survive osteosarcoma, but we wanted to pass along  Megan’s positivity and cheerfulness by donating LoveStrong Puppies to children who are inpatient at MGHfC. We started by delivering 50 LoveStrong Puppies (plush toys) on Valentine’s Day 2016. With help from Megan’s friends, we tied a blue LoveStrong ribbon around each puppie’s neck and attached a small booklet with Megan’s story.  We gathered again this year and delivered 60 LoveStrong puppies—including some for the younger pediatric patients.

LoveStrong (and the blue ribbon) is the symbol a dear friend of ours created to represent the love and support our community had for Megan during her treatment.
In her honor the LoveStrong Volleyball Scholarship was created, and has awarded scholarships to 5 girls over the past three years.

The LoveStrong Puppies is privately funded by us, her parents. Our hope is to be able to greatly increase the number of LoveStrong Puppies we can send to the children at MGHfC. We are so blessed to be Megan’s parents and we want to live up to her example by living with hope and grace.

A little bit of Megan’s joy of life gets passed along with each LoveStrong puppy and allows us to keep her legacy vibrant. Every child should know that someone is thinking of them….we hope this will serve as a small reminder. All monies from this campaign will be used exclusively to purchase high quality plush toys to be used as LoveStrong Puppies.
